Port Macquarie Hastings Council Environmental Levy

Port Macquarie Hasting Council generously allocate funds each financial year to assist with administration and communication, as well as on-ground works for Landcare groups within the Port Macquarie-Hastings Area.

Some of the on ground projects underway are:

  • Link The Paths-Hastings Public School (Port Macquarie Landcare Group Inc). This is a continuation of work commenced in 2008 where over a hectare of land has been rehabilitated with the removal of camphor laurel, lantana and other introduced species and replacement with native seedlings. A path and a footbridge have been installed for children to access the area. This path is being extended to meet up with a rainforest area and path established previously. It is also planned to build a jetty into Yarranabee Creek to provide students with an access point to study creek life.
  • Illaroo Drive Dune Rehabilitation (Lake Cathie Landcare Group). This project aims to stabilise the hind dune along Illaroo Road. There is to be a staged removal of turkey rhubarb, complete removal of lantana and removal of bitou bush. Fencing running parallel to the beach will be erected with shade cloth to protect existing and future plantings. Revegetation will be completed behind the fence using approved species.
  • Native Plants to Stabilise Reserves at Lighthouse Beach. (Port Macquarie Landcare Group). The area for this project is an important wildlife corridor that adjoins littoral rainforest. The aim is to encourage the growth of a resilient plant community that resists weed invasion. This will be achieved by supplementing previous plantings and creating conditions for natural regeneration.
